Spring
March - April - May

Your garden awakens. We make sure it flourishes.

Spring is the most important season in the gardening calendar. As soil temperatures rise and growth resumes, Green Roots carries out the essential groundwork that sets your garden up for a spectacular year ahead.

Spring clean-up & bed preparation

We clear away winter debris, cut back dead foliage, and prepare borders so new growth has room to thrive. Edges are re-cut to restore crisp definition throughout.

Lawn care & first mow of the year

Once grass is actively growing, we begin our regular mowing programme. We also apply a spring lawn feed to encourage lush, even growth and address any bare or moss-affected patches.

Fertilising borders & beds

A well-timed feed in early spring gives shrubs, perennials, and roses the nutrition they need. We use appropriate slow-release or liquid feeds depending on your soil type and planting.

Dividing & replanting perennials

Overcrowded perennials are divided, refreshed, and replanted to improve vigour and flowering. This is the ideal window to reshape borders and introduce new planting combinations.

Seasonal planting — bedding & bulbs

Hardy annuals and early bedding are installed in pots and borders from March, with tender summer bedding added in May once the risk of frost has passed.

Pruning roses & shrubs

Roses are pruned to an outward-facing bud to encourage an open, productive framework. Spring-pruned shrubs are shaped to promote healthy new stems and a strong season of flowering.

Summer
June - July - August

Peak season. Peak performance. All summer long.

Summer demands consistent, attentive care to keep your garden looking its best. From watering and feeding to deadheading and hedge trimming, Green Roots keeps everything beautifully in check throughout the warmest months.

Regular mowing, edging & weeding

Through the height of summer, we maintain a consistent programme of mowing at the correct height, re-edging borders, and keeping weeds under control before they establish.

Watering & irrigation management

We monitor soil moisture and ensure pots, containers, and planted borders receive the right amount of water — adjusting frequency during dry spells to prevent stress and drought damage.

Deadheading & feeding

Removing spent flowers from roses, perennials, and summer bedding encourages continuous blooming. We apply seasonal feeds to containers and borders to sustain colour right through to autumn.

Hedge & topiary trimming

July is the ideal time for a single, clean cut on most formal hedges. We shape topiary and trim hedgerows to maintain crisp lines and healthy structure throughout summer.

Pest & disease monitoring

We inspect plants for early signs of aphids, vine weevil, fungal disease, and other summer pests. Swift, targeted treatment protects your planting before problems can spread.

Mulching & moisture retention

A well-applied mulch layer in early summer suppresses weeds, retains moisture, and regulates soil temperature — reducing watering needs and keeping borders looking neat and finished.

Set your garden up for success next year. Our autumn programme starts in early September.
Autumn
September - October - November

A season of preparation. Building on this year's growth.

Autumn is about looking forward. The work we do between September and November protects your garden through winter and lays the foundation for another beautiful year — from bulb planting to border clearance and lawn restoration.

Spring bulb planting

September through October is the window for planting tulips, alliums, narcissi, and other spring-flowering bulbs. We plan and install displays that deliver colour from February through to May.

Autumn bedding & replanting

Summer bedding is cleared and replaced with seasonal autumn planting — pansies, violas, ornamental cabbages, and other hardy varieties — to maintain colour well into the cooler months.

Lawn restoration & overseeding

Autumn is the best time to repair a tired lawn. We scarify, aerate, and overseed bare or worn patches, and apply an autumn lawn feed to strengthen roots before winter.

Cutting back herbaceous perennials

We cut back spent perennials once they have finished flowering, tidying borders and removing diseased material. Some stems are left standing to provide winter structure and habitat for wildlife.

Leaf clearance & composting

Fallen leaves are cleared regularly from lawns, borders, and paths — left in place, they can smother grass and harbour disease. Healthy leaves are composted to return nutrients to the garden.

Frost protection & winter prep

Tender plants, exotic specimens, and container plantings are wrapped, moved, or mulched to protect them from the first frosts. We also store garden furniture and carry out any structural checks.

Winter work that pays off all year. Ask about our year-round maintenance packages.
Winter
December - January - February

The garden rests. We don't.

A quiet garden is not a neglected one. Winter is when we carry out essential structural work — pruning, planting bare-root trees, repairing, and planning — so that everything is in perfect order when the growing season returns.

Structural pruning of trees & shrubs

Dormant deciduous trees and shrubs are pruned for shape, health, and long-term structure. With leaves gone, we can see the framework clearly — this is the ideal time for any major pruning work.

Bare-root planting

November through February is the season for bare-root trees, hedging, and roses — they establish more readily than container-grown plants and offer excellent value. We plan and install new structural planting during this window.

Tool, equipment & structure checks

We inspect, clean, and sharpen all garden tools and equipment, and carry out checks on pergolas, trellis, raised beds, and any structural garden features — repairing or replacing as needed.

Mulching for frost & moisture protection

A thick mulch layer applied in early winter insulates root systems from freeze-thaw damage. We mulch borders, base planting, and vulnerable specimens to see them safely through the coldest months.

Garden planning & design review

Winter is the ideal time to step back and plan ahead. We review the past year with you, discuss improvements, and design new planting schemes — so we are ready to act the moment spring arrives.

Soil improvement & bed preparation

We dig in well-rotted compost and organic matter to improve soil structure ahead of the growing season. Beds prepared in winter are ready for planting as soon as conditions allow in early spring.
